PANAMA CITY BEACH — Bay County’s 27 miles of beaches are among the best in the world, according to a top beaches list released by CNN.
Panama City Beach landed at number 51 in the countdown of the top 100 beaches in the world, coming in as the highest ranked beach in the continental U.S. and the only beach in Florida to make the list.
“It just reinforces the position that Panama City Beach is truly a world-class beach destination,” said Dan Rowe, director of the Bay County Tourist Development Council. “Our beaches stack up with any beach on the planet, and it’s not just us saying that.”
Published on the CNN website last month, the list highlighted Panama City Beach’s blinding white sand, emerald waters, and the “retro charm” of places like Goofy Golf, a miniature golf institution on the beach since 1959.
CNN staff also highlighted the destination’s notoriety as spring break capital of the world, and pegged it as a place for “hard-core people watching” and “maybe a drink or two.”
Rowe said part of Panama City Beach’s successes as a tourist destination come from its broad appeal.
“We appeal to a wide variety of audiences,” Rowe said. “Everyone who comes here comes because it’s a real beach and they’re coming to have a lot of fun.”
The destination has also made an appearance on several other top lists from various travel media outlets.
In the last year, PCB has earned a spot on Yahoo Travel’s Top 10 Affordable Escapes for Winter, USA Today’s list of 20 Amazing American Beaches, Reader’s Digest’s Top 10 Places in the World to Swim and travel website 10 Best’s list of 10 Best U.S. Beaches.
Rowe said earning a spot on these lists gives the area more exposure and helps increase visitation.
“Through time, we have been consistently ranked as one of the best beaches anywhere,” he said. “It reintroduces us to people across the country. We want that consist message to get out there and encourage people who have never been here to come.”
